From my personal perspective over the years working with or for many attorneys (look at my profile) I can say I probably got to know fairly well forty or so attorneys, well enough to judge their honesty or dishonesty.
And I can honestly say about a third of them are pretty damn honest. Some of these are quite moral people, for that matter. Several are my friends now. Several have deep religious beliefs. And several are non-believers who still have scruples. Four that I know are ACLU members who place 'doing the right thing' above getting rich from doing the wrong thing.
Some of these attorneys have told me that lawyers don't have to lie to win cases. They only have to know the law and have the law on their side.
One such attorney I consider a friend, a well-known advocate for motorcyclists' rights, would never take on a client he believed was dishonest (like someone trying to cheat an insurance company with fake injuries).
Unfortunately, many of the other two-thirds I've worked with or for have been pretty scum when it came to winning at any costs. More than once I walked away from a job they offered me and with others often returned their retainers. And trail attorneys do tend to be more dishonest. A lot of this has to do with the same win at any cost mind-set: manipulating jury selections, the selected jury itself, witnesses and evidence.

it depends
a criminal lawyer may never be honest because the some of people he is defending actually committed a crime
but even prosecution lawyers will occasionally stretch the truth in order to win a case

Of course its possible and even preferable but these days it seems like there are as many honest lawyers as there are clean prefessional wrestlers.
We have a culture that dictates that winning is everything, there doesn't seem to be any place for honorable defeat. Sad really. :(

i haven't met ones that are quite cheating - Crown attorneys could desire to exhibit each and every thing of relevance to the different celebration - complete disclosure is basically an element of their job. If attorneys cope with their purchasers dishonestly, their purchasers can document courtroom circumstances a criminal offense society and that they are in a position to be disbarred. Who might desire to possibility dropping their livelihood? i've got constantly questioned why human beings think of attorneys are quite cheating. Is it because of the fact they fee a lot? because of the fact their line of paintings in basic terms exists through misfortune or stupidity of their purchasers? Or because of the fact attorneys, basically via their paintings, many times could desire to proceed to be own approximately what they're engaged on? I each and every so often ask your self whether human beings basically have no clue what maximum attorneys do, because of the fact they're many times in basic terms attentive to criminal protection and prosecution from television.

What keeps the term 'honest lawyer' from being an oxymoron is that I heard - from a semi-reliable source - that there IS one - somewhere.
