News photography is an excellent occupation and some become famous -- Frank Capa with the Republican Soldier being shot during the Spanish Civil War, or George Silk (an Australian) who photographer an Australian Soldier being led along a path by a Papuan Villager. Damian Parer was another Australian, mostly with movie newsreels, during WW-2 in New Guinea and North Africa. Neil Davis and Brill, both Australians from Tasmania who covered the Vietnam War for Visnews and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Photo-journalism is when a photographer also writes for the newspaper of magazine they work for. It is frowned upon in some countries by unions as they consider that you should be either a journalist or a photographer.
