My question is this... according to most religion, marriage is a holy union between those two people and God. If you are a secular person and do not necessarily believe in God will the marriage be harder to hold together because you dont have to respect God. If you want to get a divorce you can much easier because you have no regard for God. I know people get divorces all the time even when they made a holy union with God but it seems as though if the marriage was falling apart they could fix it keeping in mind that God brought them together and wants them to stay together. In a secular marriage they dont have this to pull them through. Would divorce be more likely at this point once the couple has decided they dont like each other anymore? What are your thoughts? Is secular marriage unholy so to speak and as a result more difficult to keep together in times of crisis?

Christian marriages do fall apart not just secular. HOWEVER it depends on your relaionship with God (as in how close you are) No marriage is easy but I must say when you are liveing for God there are benefits b/c when you live for him he has your back and when you pray for advice and such he will get you that advice and he will also give you strength. So I would say if you do have a strong bond with God yes it is easier since He's our comforter, counselor and shelter from the storms of life.

Because the concept of marriage (the formal union) itself is a religious one, dating back to pagan era. That is where marriage began as a formal bond. So people cannot understand the difference between a secular civil union and a religious marriage because the same term has been used for both. I say just call all unions not santcioned by religion civil unions and all unions sanctioned by a religion marriage. I know it is semantics but semantics play a large role in perception and the psyche. But no one union does not threaten another.

One has nothing to do with another. Plenty of people married in the church get divorced, get annulments, etc. My parents were married in a church and they got divorced. My mother remarried, and her pastor didn't want to perform the ceremony (and he was in the family).

Secular marriage is no more difficult - is no easier - than one based on religious motives. Divorce does not discriminate.

The divorce rate in Secular marriage and religious marriages are exactly the same. The rate of domestic violence in secular marriage and religious marriage is the same. The rate of infidelity between the two is exactly the same.

God's law prevails, if you believe in Him or not. He says the only reason He accepts for divorce is adultery. Of course secular people have more problems because they don't have God in their life.
