Windows Automatic Updates itself isn't absolutely necessary, but the service it provides is. There are other ways to get the stuff it sends out, but they tend to be techier than you probably want to get, so the answer is, leave it on.
If you're paranoid about them (and deservedly so, given Microsoft's recent covert actions), you can leave them on "Notify" and run the actual update part yourself by going to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Note: You HAVE to use Internet Explorer for that. Mozilla and probably other browser just won't work.
Be sure to get the updates one way or another, every month or so.
Good luck.

If you disable Windows updates, most likely your computer is not protected against latest threats.
There are times that Windows updates cause problems, but as a general rule, you should leave them on.
I set all of my pc's at work (125+) to download and install updates at 3:00 AM. I havent had a problem in 6 years.

There is no problem if you turn them off, but then you should remember to go to windowsupdate.com once a month and install the new security patches manually.
I have my automatic updates turned off because I prefer to install them myself so I know what kind of stuff Microsoft is trying to force upon me.
For example: Microsoft set Internet Explorer 7 as a "critical update" but it really isn't and it was so full of bugs that I didn't want it on my PC. But if you had automatic updates turned on you got IE7 whether you wanted it or not.

It's no problem if you turn it off, just remember to update manually then.
You need some (most) of the updates.

Yes, they keep your computer up-to-date but, more than that, they keep your computer more secure against online threats. So it's better not to turn them off.
