I'm actually kind of surprised that he's not. Are there any out there who are disappointed with his decision?

It's been confirmed by a few sources and he will make the formal announcement later today.

I was surprised, not least because of his stated reason - something about not being able to retain position as head of his PAC while also having a prez. exploratory committee.

What, did he think they would hire someone else while he was out raising money and then not have a job to go back to?

He would have been better off with the old standby - "family considerations".

Still, I'm actually disappointed in his decision. Don't get me wrong - I would ABHOR him as president. HOWEVER, he would be the smartest person on either end of the spectrum, and he has a very specific, even while intriguingly nuanced, view of issues, public policy, governing, and the country. He is capable of policy analyses that have really made me listen. He would have elevated the Republican primary debate and brought a lot to the table in the general.

There, I said it!

Newt put out feelers to see if he could raise some money. Apparently, he felt like the money was not there (Something John McCain should consider!) so he decided not to run.
IF Liberals actually believe the stuff they spout, then they would all vote for Newt. Of course, we know that they only spout propaganda and really don't give a hang about poor people. They believe in Marxism, so much that they are willing to settle for just a little of it until they can turn the whole tide. Their ideology is so absolute and devoted that they are completely unable to see anything else. That is part of why they are so angry, they don't understand why the rest of us can't see what they see.

I'm guessing, and I suppose it will come out before long, that he feels that his work with American Solutions may be more important than seeking the presidency. I am disappointed, because he is one of the most intelligent people on the political scene. Judging from some of the other answers, moral character is not a desirable trait. Not surprising, since the democrat candidates all seem to be sorely lacking in that regard. As Peggy Noonan once said about Mrs. Clinton, "It's not that she has low character, she has no character."

Would you feel something this quacksaviour says? He without difficulty brands nonsense and spews it out for intake through the gullible. His morals are very questionable. And please run once more Obama subsequent rime. Sarah and Newt - what a host of Dodos.

In a way, I'm glad because he is very divisive. But then, so is Hillary... That would have been a very interesting race - Hillary vs. Newt...

But just wait - maybe he'll wind up as a VP running mate for whoever gets the nomination!

I am glad, I have not been a Gingrich fan for years. So to have another candidate out this early is better for the candidates I am looking at supporting.

Not true. He did not make that announcement. He is waiting until his American Solutions committment has been fulfilled(which is happening today by the way) and then he will evaluate a run.

edit: I stand corrected & I am disappointed

VERY INTERESTING questions come to this old man's 'gray matter':
1. Why make such an announcement, now, over a year BEFORE the election?
2. Where will you be located, in about 6 months?
3. When will you be making any announcements about your future plans?
4. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON, IN THAT DAMNED BACK ROOM????

As a Democrat, I'm disappointed, if Newt had won the nomination, a sure Democratic victory would have been that much sweeter and his candidacy would have hurt the Republicans even more in congressional races. Too bad. Maybe a miracle will occurr and that crackpot Alan Keyes will win the nomination.

Wow . Just a couple days ago he said he'd explore the idea for a few weeks and then decide . Sounds like somethin's up behind the scenes . Maybe he's made an alliance with a particular candidate and agreed to not draw away support for them .
