(This happend in the U.K) This question is about an incident that happened to me yesterday, I was driving along a road doing about 50mph (speed limit 60mph) and came round to a not so sharp corner and an oncoming lorry flashed his lights rapidly and my response was to put on the breaks fearing something maybe round the corner, This event caused my van to veer onto the right lane then back into the left and hit the wall. It has totalled the front of the van i was the only one involved. I'm worried about loosing my liscence or worse jail or something. Anyone know what could be the following proceedings for this. And what possible outcomes are.

The police were involved yes, because two passing cyclists saw me at the time and phoned them, at which point i was taken to hospital it was a company vehicle under company insurance so the vehicle is not my biggest worry. But i absoloutely need the licence for my job. Secondly the van did no damage to the wall because it was a cliff face and not a man made barrier

Chill! You are not going to lose your licence!

You DO have to report accidents to the police.

Simply claim on your insurance. You won't be the first or the last to have this happen to them.

The police are only involved when there is an injury. They could say you were driving recklessly and give you 6 points for this, if they were called. But it is unlikely that you will get anything like that.

Your insurance will pay for the damage and you will have to pay your excess payment (something towards the costs of repairing the wall) it is usually £100-300 depending on your policy.
If you have fully comprehensive insurance then that will pay for the repairs to your van too and you may get a car while your van is being repaired, or the vehicle will be scrapped and you will get some money back.

It no one was injured then the police will not become involved. Unless they were called and you failed a breath test.

You only have to report accidents involving injury to the police (unless of course someone hits you and they seem to have been drinking - good plan to call them then). So long as you make good the damage to the third partys wall, and get your van repaired then no worries!

Were the police involved? Did you damage the wall? It all depends on different factors. I don't think you will go to jail, and if it was an accident, nothing will happen especially if you were insured

As you've described it, the police will have no interest. No-one got hurt and you only damaged your own vehicle.

Gotta ask how you lost control at 50 MPH on a road that has a 60 limit, though.

I would not worry your licence is safe but I i would advise your boss to get the brake calipers checked on the front of the van because if it veered to the right then the nearside (left) one is seized.

if you know whos wall it is then contact the owner so that covers you in the eyes of the law.Phone your insurers up and just put your claim in and tell them what happened.you wont go to prison and as you say no other person was injured so the police wont want to know. They only get involved if someone has been injured in most cases.

Go to jail for what? Damaging a city wall? Worst case scenario in US is a ticket and fine for careless driving and/or speeding, depending on the cop, and if he hasn't given it to you already, your'e prolly not getting one. I'd be more worried about your car.

if no person or vehicle was damaged. except yours. what is your worry. you may have to pay the damage to the wall if anyone reported it damaged and took your number. i cant see why you can lose your licence or anything.
