I cannot burn the songs I have purchased to a cd to play, why?

If you bought the music from iTunes, they don't allow you to burn most of their music onto a CD. You can only play it on your computer or on a synchronized iPod. There are an increasing number of songs that are not blocked in this way, but you may have chosen ones that can't be stored on CD.

if you bought the music video instead of just the song, then it will not allow you to burn it to a disc.

This happened to me

or if you don't have the items "checked" on the play list, then it won't burn those either.
