Some species of Penicillium are of commercial importance for fermentations used in cheese production. Examples include P. roquefortii (Roquefort cheese) or P camembertii (Camembert and Brie cheeses). Penicillium is best known for its production of the antibiotic penicillin, but its also a common contaminant. P. marneffei, is endemic to Asia and is responsible for disseminated opportunistic infections of lungs, liver, and skin in immunosuppressed and immunocomprimised patients.
