How about Alexander the Great? There's even a movie on him to spur your interest.

depends on your time period. I'd say Plato, Socrates or Aristotle. Those three pretty much layed the groundwork for Western thought. If you want to go a more military route, Alexander the Great is always a good way to go. Conquered the known world spreading western ideas to the known corners for the world.
