Paraphrase of Plato's Republic:
"Democracy is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequal alike."

Democracy is therefore a lesser form of government.
Is direct monarchy by an enlightened ruler such as Queen Elizabeth 2 then superior governance for UK?

Democracy is 3 wolves and a sheep voting on dinner, or 6 klansmen and a black voting on who to hang, another name for mob rule. This word has been used to describe our government since before WW2, starting with FDR. The US is not a democracy, it is a representative Republic. A philosopher once said of a democracy, once those who have not learn they can, through the vote, take from those who have, that society is doomed. Democracy is disorderly indeed, and may not be better than a benevolent monarchy. Our UK friends seem to do well with theirs.

Democracy is the politics of "Bread and Circuses", people who CAN vote for anything WILL vote for anything. The Ohio legislature once passed a law saying PI was equal to 3.15. Doesn't matter that PI ISN'T equal to 3.15, they voted it that way.

Democracy is the politics of saying anyone with a pulse is qualified to have an opinion on a particular issue, whether they are familiar with that issue or not, that somehow an adult moron is more qualified to vote than a genius child, that all you need to vote is to be a citizen and live in the area in which you are voting.

What Plato DIDN'T expound on was the need for RESPONSIBLE democracy, for the need of citizens to make mature, rational, well-thought out decisions affecting not only themselves, but their neighbors all across the country.

As Americans, we are supposed to be the ideal of modern democracy. We are supposed to the be the EXPERTS at it, showing the rest of the world why democracy is the best political system by showing others its freedoms and advantages, not by invading sovereign nations, removing their leader and torturing their citizens without a record of an arrest.

Ever hear the phrase, "...then the terrorists win"? Usually it's prefaced by, "If the US cuts and runs...", but people who say things such as this don't understand the terrorist mindset. Terrorists use your fear to make you change your behavior. As soon as we posted a "Terrorist Threat Board" on all the major news channels, the terrorists won. As soon as we agreed to wear paper slippers at the airport and spend even MORE time in lines, "for our safety and convenience", the terrorists won. By causing reactionaries to demand we do SOMETHING (long as THEY don't have to do it) and causing divisiveness between the warmongers and the peacewagers, the terrorists won.

By leaving Afghanistan before that mission was TRULY "accomplished" to invade Iraq, means the Taliban won and are still winning in Afghanistan.

By removing the one leader in the Middle East (Saddam Hussein) who we knew for certain would not harbor al Qaida or bin Laden, who do you think won?

A Democratic America doesn't believe in, nor resort to, torture of ANYONE.

i believe the true problem with democracy is that the people are more likely to get what they want and that is not neccessarily what is best for the people. but with a monarchy the people would have no say about the governance of there country at all. personally i believe the answer lies in the middle.

"Democracy is the most efficient form of government ever invented by the human race. On the record, it has worked better in peace and in war than fascism, communism, or any other form of dictatorship. As for the mythical yardstick of benevolent monarchy or dictatorship - there ain't no such animal." - Robert Heinlein

Nope- Democracy requires high maintenance (which admittedly we aren't giving it in the UK), but is by far the most dynamic of all systems of government available - just look into the history of Europoean monarchies- when they mess up, they REALLY mess up.

the two. human beings have distinctive characters, wellness, and purposes. yet yet all of our values innately are equivalent. yet nonetheless that comparable assessment makes a airborne dirt and dirt spec no distinctive in fee in a human existence. it is commonplace attitude. the worldwide may well be so unforgiving through fact all issues are equivalent. And people prefer to place values of value upon issues that do no longer persist with the equality of the universe to that end it is the place their unhappiness comes from. Their idealizing their concern and asserting it is excellent, and if issues at the instant are not this way then i won't enable myself to be chuffed. The greater you agree for existence, the fewer equality or inequality concerns and the greater you may merely savour existence and stay it to that's fullest.

I think a monarchy can work really well. Of course, it can also be disastrous. Same goes for a lot of forms of government, actually. Depends on a lot of other factors than just the set-up.
