...so now it seems like it is dead. Also my itunes won't pop up when i plug it in the usb now leaving me to conclude that. Is there anything I can do besides toss that 150 dollar metal square in the trash? Thanks

Leave it charging for at least 2-3 hours. Sometimes the battery runs down so low, it takes a while to achieve enough power remind itself it's an iPod and not a gob of metal & plastic.

Open itunes and set it so when you plug in the ipod it automatically pops up. believe me an ipod is not trash once you get the hang of itunes

Look in the owners manual and do a factory reset. But it sounds like the hard-drive is going out. Check you warranty it might cover it.
