Also, if public transportation is accessible-what neighborhoods are close to it (and safe)? Is it possible to find an apt. under $1000 near public transit?

Thank you for your help!

Overall, you COULD live in Denver without a car. However, there are many cities that have much better mass transit options than Denver. There is a decent bus system. There is also the light rail. However, the light rail is great for commuting from the suburbs to downtown but not a great option to get around within the city. Additionally, Denver is very sprawled out so you may want a car to visit friends who live all the way accross town.

In my personal opinion, Denver is not that great of a city if you are looking for an urban city with excellent mass transit. The great thing about Denver is the close proximity to the mountains allowing for opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. With that said, it's very hard to get to the mountains without a car.

As far as housing goes, you could find an apartment for under $1,000 near the light rail. I would look near the University of Denver or Colorado Blvd. Another possibility is that you could rent an apartment for around $600 a month in areas such as Aurora, and, use the other $400 you are budgeting to finance or lease a car and make your car payment.

Overall, Denver is great if you want a mix of urban living and outdoors. If you have no intention of doing outdoorsy stuff, you should consider a city such as Chicago because you could find an apt. for under $1K, it has great mass transit and is much more interesting of a city than Denver.

Without a car? Probably not. We are not like NYC where everything is right there for you. Stuff is pretty well spread out here. We have a bus system w/ stops all over the city, as well as a light rail train w/ stops downtown, south and southeast part of town.
Most of the light rail stops are in relatively safe areas and it is inexpensive to ride.
You won't find anything downtown for under $1000. My guess is that you might try Apt. Finders for what you're looking for.

You can live there without a car, but after riding RTD for a while, you'll be looking to purchase one rather quickly.

There are many apartments located near public transportation for under 1K. That's not a problem.

Yes to all your questions, RTD covers suburbs and area towns. It's a big metropolitan area.
