What about it? In California, we have cedar and redwood bark chips that are red. They produce a tannin that deters weed growth. The size of the chips determines the amount of cold protection we get from it. If you have wildfire problems you should not use them around structures, they burn hot when dry. They are starting to sell bark shavings which if used around plants provide good cold protection.

I prefer for plants to use mulch which protects plants as well as add nutrients to the soil.
