Is it true about if you scratch it across a mirror, you can tell if it is real?. I have a bracelet swamped in glittering crystal thingies, but they look like diamonds. It's from the twenties flapper era, from my great aunt, and it looks real, but I'm not sure. If it's a costume piece, I don't care it's sentimental, but I am just curious to test it.

Yes, if you rub a diamond on the corner of glass or a mirror, it will scratch it. Also, if you breathe on a diamond, it doesn't fog up.

It would easier to take the bracelet to a reputable jewler and have him or her examine it. If it is that old the you don't want to run the risk of damaging it if turns out to be of value. Most jewlers will be happy to look at the stones and tell you if they are real or fake.

Glass will scratch glass. Take it to a jeweler to get it appraised.
