Fireplace was originally intended for wood but has a gas burning kit installed. I have seen gas fixtures that can be used to get a wood fire started, so it seems that this should be fine to use the installed gas fixture to do this, right? Or is there a special fixture that is required to burn either wood or gas or just serve as a gas starter for wood fires.

This is the same idea as using charcoal or mesquite chunks in a gas grill.

As you have described it I believe it will work just fine. The only problem you might run into is having ash and soot from the wood clog up the nozzles of the gas fixtures.

If you decide to do this, make sure the wood is not burned directly over the nozzles. Burn it off to the side.
Also, for safety's sake I would turn the gas off. There should be an in-line valve somewhere near your fireplace that requires a little wrench.

If you have a fireplace in the house... have a fire extinguisher near. Its just common sense.

Put a grate on top of the gas jets. Add logs, use gas to start wood fire, turn gas off.

Too involved of a question to answer from your description alone. It really needs to be evaluated by a professional. Natural and LP gas are nothing to play around with. Your local gas company should have someone available to come out and survey the situation for free. Call them...please!

If you don't know, get someone to look. They could have modified the flue, or the piping may not be designed to have heat below it. I would look up an installer in phone book and as him/her to look. If it is not suitable he may be able to modify it cheaply.
