Trying to kill ant one at a time is a life long task. They have higher reproductive rates than you have time and patience. With mine I followed them to their nest (just a small hole in the ground) I would then pour hot soapy water in the hole. You can use pesticides or diesel if you are so inclined, I don't like to pollute my land so I use soap and water. I did this for about 3 years. Four or Five times per year. They moved the hole every time, once about 10'. But eventually they were gone.

Ants also like a roof over their nest. Whenever I try to dig them out I find them under a rock, even when a couple of feet down. They could be under your walkway or other structures. In that case you should find Boric acid at your nursery and place it near their trail, sheltered from the rain. It is syrup like or comes in little metal cups. They take this food/poison to their nest and share it. It may take a full season before they all die.

In hardware stores they sell a powder which you sprinkle on the ground a few inches from your house - all around in the same shape as your house. It's worth a try. It worked for our cottage! You need to put more than a sprinkle on the ground so you may need two if you have a bigger house.

try diatomaceous earth, around the perimeter of your home. Avavilable at garden centers. Also borax is another aid.
