Interestingly enough, my Mom is liberal, my Dad is conservative, I grew up conservative and my sister grew up liberal. We were raised together and my parents treated us very fairly. We were well loved and had tons of affection, but my parents' expectations for us and our behavior were very clear and there were consequences (loss of privileges, not physical violence) if we disobeyed. We were held accountable for our behavior, which was good. Turned us into responsible adults.
