Isn't that from a poem, I think by John Donne. One of the only poems I ever bothered memorising.
No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a part of the continent, a piece of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promonitory were, as well as if a manner of thy friends or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and so never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.
It's also an Ernest Hemingway book, which also takes its name from this poem.
