Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume control is where it is located

To have it on the taskbar:

Control Panel -> Sounds and audio devices -> Check the box that says "Place volume icon in taskbar".

If you can't find volume control, try adding it by going to Control Panel -> Add/remove programs

On the left side, add/remove windows components

Go to accessories or entertainment and see if it is installed. If not, install.

The path to the switch that places the volume control in the tray is: Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Volume tab. If you have tried this and have had no success, then you may need to install the drivers for your mother board. One of them is a "sound" driver that must be install for your audio devices to function. These drivers should be on the disk that came with your mother board or your system. If you don't have these disks, the drivers can be downloaded from either the computer manufactures web site or from the mother board manufactures site.
