The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be a big one 20 years from now. I really do believe they are the greatest band to come out of this generation.

Also The White Stripes, Tool, Cake, Radiohead, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Incubus, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Rage Against the Machine.

I don't find any bands today that I believe will stand any test of time. There are great bands out there working their way through the underground but I just don't see how mainstream rap or bands like FOB and MCR are going to be anywhere near relative in 2030. For example, people are getting more excited about The Who getting back together with only two of their original members or Zeppelin regrouping for a one night gig than the current crop of crap. There's tons of bands out there who are just a flash in the pan due to their role in a certain genre. The only current bands I can see that will be played 20 years from now are U2 (and they don't count since they formed 25 years ago), the Red Hot Chili Peppers (same as U2 but their latest album was flat out boring (bring back the days of Mother's Milk)) and The Foo Fighters. I just feel that the mainstream music scene these days is a sad state of affairs.

Edit: OK I forgot a few such as Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead but even then, those bands have been around for at least 15 years now and have a core base of fans. Also most of these bands have not really had a big radio-friendly hit in a long time (Creep is the only big one Radiohead ever had except for few alternative stations and that song pretty much sucked (I'll take anything off The Bends or OK Computer anyday)). I'm thinking more of bands that have originated more recently and are using radio to get their name out and sell albums. Even The White Stripes or Muse are questionable. While I like both of them tremendously, go poll 100 people on the street and you'd probably be lucky if 15% of the people had heard of them. It just seems that the users of Yahoo Answers are more in the know of today's music than the casual listener.

Then again what do I know. I hate FM radio and won't listen to it for the most part. The only station I listen to anymore by choice is 91.7 KTRU, the Rice University radio station, online.

I'd say U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Coldplay.

I don't think of MCR, FOB, P!ATD as "big". There's nothing big about them, they're just famous among teenagers. However, all of the bands I mentioned are very talented and critics like them.

In emo=The Academy Is...
In punk=Fall Out Boy
In rock=Paramore
this is just pretty much what I think. These bands are all on top in their genres right now.
