I will say Kiss. They were all about the show and they couldn't hardly play their instruments.

I really, really like Pink Floyd though...
I would put up Guns and Roses, mostly because the many covers they did, Axl's nails on a chalkboard voice (worked well in some songs, but still... BLECH!), and the overuse of a valuable resource- grease. Greasiest. Hair. Ever.
Right behind them would be bands like KISS. They were probably fun to watch, but the music was unpleasing at best. Friggin' Nancy Wilson could kick Gene Simmons' butt in a fistfight.

Pink Floyd is not overrated! Darkside, WYWH and The Wall are overrated, but can you truely say that Pink floyd is overrated? Most people don't even own Meddle or Atom Heart Mother or Ummagumma and that's where all their best stuff is.
In my opinion, the Rolling Stones. They were never as great as their fellow British invasion bands but becmae so famous cause they made radio friendlt singles.

classic rock is merely that, classic. each and every performer (group or indiviual) accomplished because it or he/she on the subject count of song. for this reason, it is excellent if one does unlike some band, or sense it is hyped up. it is how the listener perceives the song. An occasion of it is the Beatles music, "Come mutually". classic artwork. yet, there's a version accomplished by skill of Aerosmith, that I very a lot dislike. don't get me incorrect, i like Aerosmith. i've got not got an appreciation for their rendition of "Come mutually", in spite of the shown fact that it is in certainty an identical music. And, addressing your concern of Led Zeppelin, i like Led Zeppelin, yet I actual have days that i actual desire they weren't enjoying Zeppelin song on the air. relies upon on the temper. I am unable to determine the most "overrated" band, but I nominate Led Zep for the most overplayed. You cant listen to KLOS 95.5FM (Los Angeles) w/o hearing a Led Zep song at least once an hour.

Hmm, few, if any are overrated to me. They came along at a time when most bands actually each had an original sound. For ex: Steely Dan didn't sound like Thin Lizzy & Thin Lizzy didn't sound like Lynryd Skynyrd. Compare that to now when all these little pop punk outfits who all have the same basic sound.
But I'd say the Grateful Dead.

Hmmmm.... looking at all the answers- you covered all the big names that I may or may not disagree with.
So I nominate a band who I guess was so big (headed) they even put out a greatest hits a few yrs. ago which about gagged me. WINGS. I was glad that band was on the run.
