my mum is going from australia in december for 12months to work/voluntery at a school. and then the two ofus want to travel around india for about a month. however we're only aware that she can get a visa for 12months at the max. any ideas what we should do, she can't not work for less than 12months coz thats the length of the school year. does it means she has to leave the country, apply for a tourist visa and re enter?

Visa. Don't leave home without it. You won't be able to return home if you did.

I am not an expert but I checked recently about visas for foreigners ....I suggest you investigate certain aspects of this, one being that you need to go to one of the local offices in India and register as a foreigner ....at that time you can declare your intention to stay, and they can extend your visa, according to their recommendation..... be sure to take along a couple of extra passport-sized photos while you are at it ....

I am sure you do not need to spend your money and time to leave the country and re-enter .....India is not so backward or so unfriendly! ....they consider the guest as God, and that includes foreign travellers! I do know, because I have travelled in India.
