Not to long ago we use to use something called Potpourri. I don't know if you have ever heard of it. I think you can still by bags of it in fragrance shops or candle shops. It consist of basically flower petals or other sweat smelling items and you place them in a decorative vessel and place over heat like a candle.
You can make your own if you would like. Orange peels, lemon peels, spices, you name it. If you like the smell make a potpourri with it.

All extremely valid answers so far...BUT; you say Air Freshener, and didn't strictly state air fragrance medium.
Obviously those suggestions and in my opinion great ones; pretty much MASK odors. You also don't state the "condition" of the breathable air; or WHY you think it needs "Freshening"
Some of many issues might be indoor trash receptacles/ food waste/ Bathroom exhaust/ AC filters/ lingering cooking odors from substances like Onions or Garlic.
Certainly there are products that make LOUD claims about absorbing and destroying ODOR; and they probably sell very well. I happen to enjoy those NATURAL essence products, even those like scented oils and Incense; but those too are Masks.
Obviously it's personal opinions here,,,albeit very good ones; but you might want to define what it is; in the form of odor "freshening" you really prefer. In a Scientific sense a FRESHENER might more closely relate to a PURIFIER.

In a pan of water on your stove in your kitchen, simmer some water, a sliced orange, a sliced apple, and some cinnamon and cloves. Put it on low and let it simmer there for an hour or two. It will make your home smell so good.
