Nope. Make sure you fully research your motherboard and processor types to ensure full compatibility. Different processors are made to fit different motherboard types. For example, and AMD Sempron will fit a motherboard which is Socket A (754?). Another processor may fit into a different motherboard. Each motherboard has different configurations and different potentials. If you want to upgrade an older motherboard, it's probable you won't be able to just replace the processor.

No. You have several different types of processors with different sockets. Some can be upgraded and some can not. You need to determine what kind of chip you have. If its intel you can go here http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=861to download a utility to tell you what kind it is. For instance, I have a Dell that uses the 478 pin processor, but the motherboard will only support up to 2.8GHz. Hope this helps you out

When you buy a new CPU, you can ask to make sure you can return it if it doesn't fit.

Most CPU's are about the same size as far as I recall.
Mother boards are more likely to not fit.
