On Windows XP, you can follow this guide, actually, for using BOTH monitors at the same time, which is quite useful. Its the same process as to use only your PC monitor, so you can choose :

If you have Windows vista, the difference is that you access the Display properties settings directly, it's not a tab. The rest is all the same :-)

1)Check the power cord.
2) Make sure the laptops resolution is with in the range of the new monitor.
3) If the laptop has settings for a second Monitor, make sure they are correct.

some laptops need to have a docking station to do this be careful not to burn up your video card. after you check this out first right click on your desktop and look at your settings to see if you can use the monitor output hope This helps.

Their should be a port at the back for a normal monitor and mouse .

You normally need to press a key combination to change from laptop display to external display. The combination will be Fn and one of the function keys like F5 or something. (F5 is one of the more common ones but you may have a different setup)
