I believe that the new California laws regarding "distractions" is just that. It is not necessarily aimed at specific acts. Actually there are at least two separate additions to the vehicle code. One is specifically about using handheld electronic devices (cell phones, GPS) the other is distractions (eating, applying make-up, watching a video, etc). In California it is a major problem that contributes to many accidents. Anything that causes a driver to be distracted while operating a motor vehicle is a violation. A driver of a vehicle has the responsibility to focus on driving, nothing else. Too many drivers take this responsibility too lightly and because of this others become permanently injured or even killed. I was struck by a young woman who was deeply engaged in a conversation with her passenger and failed to notice that traffic had stopped in front of her. Thank you for higher insurance rates and a damaged spine.

lol no breathing, i think i might die.....lol....its bull, i thought it was bad that they changed to the graduated drivers license when i was going for mine, and i had rules like,. no driving between 12am and 6am unless on your way to or from work, and have to take several levels of classes and stuff like that but now i think that made me a better driver, and i see how that helps, but no loud music, i cant drive with out loud music(and i mean loud i have 2 12" RF and stuff in my vehicle) i have to talk to my passengers, what if they ask me where we are going, or if they have to tell me where to go, they are my friends i cant sit in silence that is all crap, the phone thing on the other had is a good thing, don't you have to turn around to check your blind spot??? now you cant??? and i can smoke in my vehicle as i damn well please, they have already banned it from almost everywhere but my house, i will be damned if i don't smoke in my vehicle

i think they are getting carried away.

the only one i agree with is cell phone use... because im sure most of us have noticed when people are talking on the phone they just do not pay attention to the road..

personally, i do not like talking and driving, and everyone who knows me knows this, and i will answer only a call from the hubby or the kids, and i make it short and to the point, and i will remind them i am driving, so unless it is an emergency it CAN WAIT until i get home...

That's an exaggeration, probably for satire. Anyway, if you're not supposed to turn around how do you check your blind spots before changing lanes, and I'm sure we don't want cars veering out of control when drivers pass out because they're not breathing.

I think smoking while driving can be distracting. So is drinking coffee! So is brushin your teeth, applying lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, powder and whatever else so artfully!
