I am 22 year old. I am from Thailand. I have been studying BA and MPA in the United States. I will have Master Degree in Public Administration (HR management) in May 2008.

I am currenty applying for jobs in the United Nations. There are a few position open in my home country (Thailand) like Sttaf Assistant G5, and Admistrative Assistant G6.

I am only 22, but I am over qualified for those jobs in Education, but not in experiences. Should I apply for those jobs just to get into the UN? Will I get ahead starting as the Administrative Assistant position? To what extent does I will get ahead? Should I wait for better positions?

Please advice. Thank you very much for your kindness.

I have read some of the answers and all mean well for you.The factual ground conditions in Asia are very different than in the west.Say,your expectation for UN job may look valid but may not come through due to extraneous local prevailing conditions like nepotism, lack of official or political connections/support and whatever.More over,UN jobs look appealing in Dollar terms when converted in to your local currency but are nothing more than survival rations when posted abroad.Such jobs have no marketability in any job markets save for few nondescript side lined positions.Cutting the list short,I would prefer to take up a job in the states ,work my way up and think of going back to my country (if I really want to )when able to get a middle level or a higher position with a bargaining chip with me.To serve your country well ,you must have the authority and power, which can only come with a worth while appointment or a position. This way you can look after your own interests as well of your country. a WIN WIN SITUATION FOR BOTH.Now,you decide and let sentiments take a break while you do that. All the best.

If I were you I would wait a while longer and see what else is offered to you in time for you finishing your masters degree, if you need to take a job immediately then go for either of the ones offered to you and then look for a better position once you have your degree, all the very best and good luck.

Don't wait for a better position because who knows when that will be, just get yourself in the door and once your in then work on advancing, even though you are over qualified through education, by using it on the job your experience will grow from it and the higher ups will notice it. Good luck and I know you will soar high in your career, just don't give up.

The only advice I can give is have patience, your young and obviously smart, and you have ambition, however trying to get the top of the ladder without even climbing the first step could lead to failure.
