This is true, it helps make the baby feel secure. They aren't sure what causes SIDS but they say children who take a pacifier day or night have a reduced risk of SIDS, also not letting your baby cry for more than 2 minutes day or night.

Doctors now believe that babies should be given a pacifier at bedtime to reduce the risk of SIDS. Experts believe that the pacifier prevents the baby from sleeping too deeply - a problem with babies prone to SIDS. However, you should not reinsert your babys pacifier if it falls out during sleep, never coat the pacifier with any sweet substance, and dont force a pacifier on your baby if he or she refuses it.

I even have heard it does decrease the prospect of sids... the reason i study someplace became that as quickly as infant has something interior the mouth, if he stops respiratory, the pacifier will remind him to respire... you will desire to undestand that it would not preclude, yet lowers the prospect like maximum of alternative issues.. i does no longer supply my infant a pacifier in basic terms for that.... putting a infant on his returned to sleep, making valuable the air interior the room is sparkling, no longer allowing any smoking interior the domicile, etc. are what is going to truly decrease the prospect of sids...

I read this article and did some more research, and this artiocle led me to som interesting statistics, and it is pretty convincing as to what actualy causes SIDS,
SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome) is caused by mold. http://napleswaterdamage.blogspot.com/2007/09/sids-caused-by-mold.html

yes they are suppose to help reduce the irsk because it keeps the baby in more allert state of mind while they sleep and the sucking helps them to remember to breathe. pacifiers increase teh risk for ear infections though
