Hi, I have a septic system with a gravel pit. The pit has a serious fat build up and now the system is backed up. I have fixed the source of the problem, but now need to get the fat out of the pit. I have used serious quantities of caustic soda which is having an effect but I haven't actually cleared the blockage. Does anyone know of a substance that is very effective at dissolving a sizeable amount of fat?

I would think the caustic soda has or will have a negative effect on the" ACTION" in the tank and the field system. You should try Rid-x. At least 2-3 boxes. This will help keep the bacteria active. Also, It might take a little time to dissolve fat and waste.

Go to the grocery store, and buy some yeast. The stuff they use in baking bread. The bacteria in the yeast will attack the fat, and start to break it up. Depending upon the amount of fat, you may need several packages, and it will take time. This is a lot cheaper than the commercial products. A small package of yeast, once a month works wonders in a septic system.

If the home remedies do not work you may need a new drainage field. From now on do not put any grease or fat down your pipes its the worst thing for a septic.
