I have done two tours of duty as a Marine to Iraq, once in Fallujah and another time in Ar Ramadi. I can tell you from my experiences that they are (I wont say normal) oxygen breathing human beings... most of them. The ones that chose to engage in firefights with us and chose to plant IEDs for us where extremeist.
Family, is what is most important to them. This is a big reason that alot of them chose not to help us in prying out the insurgents in their provinces, because of fear. They were generally seperated by tribes, and to the extremist, if you were not in their tribe then you did not matter much to them. Extremist from one tribe would travel to a diffrent province and fight there, they were then free to set IEDs, ambushes and use wemon and children as "meat sheilds" without fear of harming their own family or tribe.
The people in Iraq are living in fear, so when you hear on TV of the Iraqi people speaking out that they want the US Military out.... that is the extremist, those Insurgent cells within each tribe who were happy with a corrupted goverment. Because it left them free to run the provinces and do as they wish without the conciequences of a civilized, Justified! goverment. The ones that want us there is regular ol "Joe Shmoe Ahmed" who is intent on earning a peaceful, safe, honest neighborhood for his family.
To beleive that they are all "Anti - American" claims ignorance, immaturity and innocence. Because they are not. In Iraq, their country is struggling for democracy and peace. Their honest citizens are struggling and fighting for peace. All they want to do is send their kids to school without fear. They are just now recovering from the harsh rule of Suddam, so it will take some time before they can trust their current goverment... Extremist has given a bad name to all Islams... most are just trying to raise a family and live their lives.

I've lived in Egypt and Bahrain, traveled extensively throughout the region, so can state that issues like how women are treated are not the product of an over-imaginative media, but an actually ideology belief.
Frankly, religion is a dual edged sword, it gives hope, yet man corrupts it through power plays and such, killing or shunning those who pray differently, or what have you.
Does the hope it gives balance against the number of deaths cause in its name?

I know that a lot of the reason peaceful Muslims do not more actively protest the terrorist acts of fundamentalist extremists is out of fear...fear that the extremists will turn on them for speaking out, because they want to portray a united front to the non-Muslim world and do not tolerate dissension in their midst.

In other words... Pay no attention to the world out there.
Look only in your hometown.
If you didn't see it in person, with your own eyes..it never happened

Grammar error. You should have used "through" rather than "threw."
