My car WAS running great...had no problems with it. Then all of a sudden it started this....

I drove for about 15 minutes. The car seemed fine. I came to a spot where traffic was stopped so I started to slow down. As soon as I put my foot on the brake, the car started to shake and shudder violently and it just DIED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!

Ok, so I put it in park. I started it back up (it started fine). I pulled the shifter back into drive and the car shut off again. I did this over and over. The car started fine everytime but as soon as I put it in drive it shut off.

I drifted it off of the road and sat there for about 20 minutes. I started it back up, put it in drive and it was FINE again.

I drove home, put my foot on the brake to stop at a stop sign and it did it AGAIN!!!! I waited another 20 minutes. Started it again and finally got it all the way home.

Does ANYBODY know what could be wrong?

I don't want to put a lot of $ into it....it has 200,000 miles on it. Also, it's a 94 Chevy Cavalier (if that matters).

It is a transmission issue, sounds like possibly the torque convertor is staying locked causing it to make these symtoms. Your best bet is to take it to a transmission repair shop and get a proper diagnoses.

I'd agree with the trans being the problem and probably the TCC solenoid which is for the Torque Converter Control---your car has a torque converter in the trans which is designed to lock up via the TCC solenoid (which controls that function) at higher speeds to improve gas mileage..it's probably malfunctioning and locking up too soon which is causing the car to stall. It can be expensive to fix because the solenoid is inside the trans side cover and many items have to be removed to replace it but not too bad. Detailed description on repairs here--- http://www.technicalevolution.com/gm125.htm
Could also be a problem with the brake switch which controls the TCC somewhat and it sounds like the problem is ocurring when you hit the brakes so that could be the culprit. There are ways to disconnect the wiring to the TCC solenoid that eliminate it operating which will also cure the problem but you'll lose some fuel economy. Ask some trans shops in your area if they can do this for you to save money if the brake switch repair doesn't cure it.

"Your car always stalls when you slow down to come off a freeway and the speed gets below, say 25 or 30 mph. You've eliminated an engine problem as the cause and you've read through my features on how to Diagnose Automatic Transmission Problems and Diagnosing GM Converter Lock-Up Problems. You know you have a bad TCC solenoid and you think you're in for a big bill at the dealer or transmission shop to have it replaced."

i could call or bypass to the keep and tell them they have a week to sparkling up the concern, or they are going to be speaking with my lawyer! do no longer bull sh!t them! hire an lawyer and sue them! It actual sounds to me as though they actually did no longer set up a sparkling engine, yet a used one. A lemon regulation would not word in this occasion. you may could take it to a distinctive shop, like the dealership to get it fixed surprising. Then sue the storage that put in the tousled engine.... Any way you minimize it you're gonna could spend greater money!

I would have to say with no check engine light it has to be an o2 sensor, maf sensor, or something else in the air fuel system ... could be a clogged cat but doubt it. Something is causing it to stall more than likely it's in the fuel system and a dirty maf sensor would cause this so would many other things ...

Come to think of it your engine may not have a MAF sensor so it could be an vacuum leak some where ...

Good luck

High miles but sounds like you took care of it good. Vacuum leak, Brake Booster behind the master cylinder for the brakes. Not sure but it sounds like it might be the booster its self. Good shop can do a vacuum leak-down test to verify it.

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

Sounds like a possible fuel pump or fuel filter problem. I would start in the fuel system.
