Are you scanning your computer with Avast! for the first time? If so be patient because it builds it's Virus Recovery Database as well, while scanning your computer for the first time. Subsequent scans will take much lesser time. When I had Windows, Avast! took only 20 - 25 minutes to scan my 23 GB of data.
:)

How big is your HDD? (nothing personal ;-) )
I only recently went to Avast after Avira AntiVir gave me lots of update probs; but I find Avast to run as fast as anything else I've ever used.
Perhaps you need to do an uninstall/reinstall.

The only way is to delete some files/programs from your computer so it don't have so many files to scan.
As with all antivirus programs.
