Will it damage or shorten the life of the engine or transmission?

What about when you're climbing a steep hill or towing a heavy load?

its not really "bad" to do it, but do it in moderation. higher rpm is very stressful on engines....i spin my toy engines usually 6000-7000 rpm (chevy 350 and 400) and they hold together fine. but then again if i make it to 5000 miles i am happy!!! and to put it in perspective i usually shift at 4500-5000 rpm all the time...so yes, in my case it is hard on the engines...but its a trade off for big cams, deep gears and higher horsepower.
-do it occasionally, keep up the maintainance and you'll be fine.

foot down all the way, is ok. You want lower gear when pulling hills because engine rpms are higher with better TORQUE power through transmission and rear gears to pull heavy loads at lower speeds. Circulates COOLANT at higher volume vs HEAT produced in Engine.

Overspeed of engine only as good as the oil vs the heat produced vs friction of metal parts.

Out of gear, between gears, threat of breaking anything at maximum rpms. Need sticky oil.

Shifting gears, shifting automatic, all cause wear on transmission parts. See the shops alongside the road?

well its like this, large truck, diesel heavy loads just drive easy in the first half of your gears, then if you really have to, just pump it up from there & hold it on, if you can handle it, your fuel pump should set at factory specs to suit the rest of the drive train for the intended job it was built for,, plenty of expearance on this, if you play with the fuel, you get more revs= more speed, slight power incres, over standed rev range you will start to break stuff, $$$$$$$$
