Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) can be ranked among the world champions in Chess.
It was said (unconfirmed) that he offered God the odds of "a pawn and move".
To those who don't know chess, it means to play minus one pawn and to play Black.
He died a pauper and insane.
Has God shown him kindness? After all, if he had a mental breakdown, then God gave him exactly what he wanted, eternal beauty in positional play, close quarters eternal combat, etc.
Or, had God made him an example of his terrible wrath?
