regionalism? Vs. amateur sports and competitions like the Olympics, etc. I don't understand the pride.

It's a guy thing sweety. No cosmic reasoning behind it, just men trying to relive a childhood fantasy usually past down. That is it. Now the Territorial aspect is a little different. To root for your regional team is a total sense of pride, totally Territorial. Once again, "a guy thing".

People start rooting for sports teams as children. Many adults have a long association with a particular team. Then they go to high school and college, and often pick up new teams.

As someone once said about the comings and goings of the teams, "You root for the laundry" -- meaning that you root for what's on the front of the jersey and not on the back.

As I've gotten older, I've found that the nationalistic implications of some sports is a little troubling. I like to see the USA win, but there's enough of "my country vs. your country" feeling out there. I like the idea of individual athletes competing, such as in track, swimming, etc.
