The e-brake idiot light on my winter rat stays on when the brake is disengaged.
I've pulled the wire (just one wire, btw), which clips into the side of the switch, but the light is still on. I tried grounding the wire, no luck. I can't pull the fuse without disabling the other lights, and pulling the bulb would require dismantling the dash. Can any gearheads help me?

The car is a '92 Buick Century.

The problem is electrical. New brakes, including a new e-brake cable, were installed 14 months ago. The e-brake only engages the rear drum brakes, and I have verified that the brake isn't engaged by jacking up the rear and spinning the tires by hand. Again, the e-brake switch only has one wire, which I unclipped.

Thanks to everybody who have answered so far.

Unplug the brake fluid level sensor (on the master cylinder)to see if light off. That brake light is not for the e-brake alone, when the brake fluid is low, also turns that light on.HTH.

Could be that the brake is not disengaging. Could be a fault in the wire,I would choose to go on the side of wisdom and assume that the brake is engaged. Maybe minor if at all, yet even a slightly engaged brake can lead to total brake failure if left unattended to or ignored.
The auto is 15 years old or more already, that is ten years past what it was designed for.
Get a Haynes/Chiltons manual or any service manual for that car and inspect the Brake System and everythng associated with it.
The tapeover is a'fix' that will satisfy you for a while, but the problem or non problem will remain.
I would rather it be fixed proper than have total brake failure.

It's a grounding circuit for that light...Could also be wired into the master cylinder for fluid level warning...check for a wire at the master cylinder. Otherwise, it's grounding somewhere else...have to trace or pull the bulb or put black tape over the light.

this sounds like the E-break pedal is slipping down and engaging the sensor....perhaps tighten up linkage or adust switch or evan the rednck style use some bailn' wire to hold it in its place to keep from engaging the light.....if your still lost go to your local auto parts store and see if they have a repair manual to help guide you along....good luck!!!

You ever think there is a reason they call it an "Idiot" light? And then think there is a reason it is on. Find the reason and fix it.

Use either some black tape or black paint and paint the clear cover where the light is. I did that on my old LTD.
