I usually cringe seeing the first tinseley bling and jingle on television ads from the middle of October onwards. I don't hate Christmas Day, I just despise the commercial band-wagon that infiltrates the tradition. Does anyone else feel like this? The stress of shopping among other stressed shoppers (who don't want to be there anyway), the high street charity-guy/beggar surge, thinking you have more cash to divulge their way, the endless campaign of fashionable must-have items, the persistent stupidity of a drunken idiot? Is it not too much too soon?

I hate it!!! I have been looking for lunch boxes since school started....I can't find those at all, but I can already get a prelit tree...I think they boxed up the school supplies early this year to make way for the Christmas merchandise.

Yes indeed. My local Tesco has a full range of Halloween stuff and Christmas stuff is also on the shelves. Well beginning now! I think it's way too early. On a happier note ... They have a sale on cards and wrapping papers for Christmas? So got wrapping paper at €1-49 a roll. Same paper will be up to €3-99 if not more in a few weeks time. So i got the paper if i have yet to buy presents and i shan't be starting for a while either LOL. I mean!!! Still depressed after home coming following a lovely holiday in the south of France ... Not ready for Christmas shopping stress as yet!

I think Christmas has become too commercial, but that doesnt mean you need to participate in making it that way. just becuase some item is splashed across the tv screen doesnt mean you have to go out and buy it. and I dont feel stressed shopping amongst other stressed shoppers becuase I enjoy Christmas shopping. I go only when I have the time to spend there, not like some morons who have 20 minutes and freak out becuase there is a line up. if people dont want to be there then I suggest they stay home. nobody is forcing them to buy gifts. if you know the true meanign of the holiday and keep that alive in your heart then there shouldnt be a problem. the thing with alot of commercials too is that in Canada (where I live) thanksgiving is next weekend so accpet for halloween (blah...I hate it) Christmas is the next holiday so stores that are around in both the US and Canada start commercials early for reasons like that.

I absolutely agree. The real spirit of Christmas is lost with all the stress. We have agreed in our family now that we all buy each other presents not costing any more than £10 although the children in the family do get a bit more spent on them. This has worked well for the last few years and it's just so much fun trying to get that bargain. I'm fed up with the commercials on t.v. advertising really expensive toys for children, especially when they put the word 'only' in front of the horrendous price for the latest 'must have' toy.

Agreed that the commericial assault does infiltrate a bit too early, especially the negatives you mention. Instead I try to shop early and only go out in the crowds when and if I want to. Also agreed, the charity people are getting to be far too much. One way to combat this is to keep a pocket with coppers and slightly more valuable change, and drop a bit in here and there. Problem is that with some it just seems to encourage them more.
In uni grad studies, money is rather short with me, but I won't let the finances rob me of the fun--I will simply be cautious.

I totally understand you! It is the most irrataing thing, going shopping for groceries and everything is covered in mistle toe and holly packaging! You think to your self that it is only the 1st of October!! What I hate the most is that I am from south africa and it just doesnt snow there and we get these adverts on t.v with snow all over the show! Or post cards with snow scenes?? It just is not a south african christmas!! I hate it purely because I know that somewhere out there some one is trying to con me into buying something for peole I dont see or hear from half the year!! I love christmas day and the celebration.. but the build p just gets earlier and earlier every year!!

I certainly agree with you! I don't hate it either but it has become way to commercialized lately and it seems to get earlier every year i think we'll soon be seeing adverts and even christmas trees going up in the middle of summer soon enough!
I work in a shop and our decorations will be going up very soon we already have the gifts in and on the shelves so by the time it comes around i'll already be sick of it ain't it fun!

I started to see the Christmas cheer appear in some London shops towards the end of August. This could be why and more so since the children have grown up is to turn my back on Christmas .
