Personally, I'm not too big of a fan.

On the other hand, I admire the book as an introduction to the pleasures of reading for those who've previously been ignorant. Who knows, maybe they'll finish Harry Potter, pick up the Chronicles of Narnia, and move on to Paradise Lost? It's an unlikely hope, but hope nonetheless. Also, it's an easy read, which is a great relief. It's encouraging to people who don't normally like to read to get involved, and it's like a vacation for people who are avid readers. After reading fifteen or so pages of Charles Dickens describing a dusty wedding cake, let me assure you how good it feels to read something that moves a bit faster. Not that I think JK Rowling and Charles Dickens with his Miss Haversham are anywhere near on the same level for comparison, but they both have their pros and cons.

Finally, it's fun to read. It incites imagination and almost invites the reader to role play with the characters. While perhaps not the most mentally stimulating, intellectually endorsing piece of literature, it has its good points and should be commended for the widespread growth of reading as a popular past time amongst elementary students and adults who'd long forgotten the hobby alike that it has caused.

In a world where television was fast replacing paper and ink, and images for the eyes made invisible images for the mind, a popular book, no matter its content, should bring you to awe simply because it is popular.

I don't think that it is 'crap'. It might not be what you like but the children and young people who read simply vote with their feet. At the start of the series, there was no massive PR exercise to get children to read it. From what I've heard, it was word of mouth.

There are many better written books (and many worse), but I think that children deserve a mix of things to read. Something that purely engages the imagination is as valid as anything else.

I don't think trailer trash has anything to do with it. I imagine mose of the people you would consider trailer trash either can't or choose not to read.

You can't force a child to like something, they enjoy what they do and if it captures them, then that is fantastic, as it can engage them in books and reading forever.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you need to insult others that don't share your opinion. I happen to enjoy the Harry Potter novels myself. I think that they are full of great, highly developed characters who grow as they progress through the series. The story line kept me entertained all the way through the series, and there were enough twists and turns in the plot to keep me from knowing exactly what was going to happen in the end. The series gained an extraordinary amount of popularity and publicity, and personally, I was pleased to see people actually excited about reading a book. That doesn't seem to have to much in our present world. I certainly wouldn't force you to read the books if you don't enjoy them, but there is no need ot be rude and disrespectful to those that do.

Sometime in the 1960s the Labour Education minister Anthony (otherwise known as Tony) Crossland vowed to 'get rid of last ******* grammer school' in England. This pettily put, idea to remove the 'ladder of opportunity' that many of the cabinet had not needed themselves (having attended top public schools) has resulted in an arguably even more unfair system whereby anyone who wants to attend a good school (grammer or comprehensive) may now have to travel further than before. I attended an ex-grammer school that fortunately still had grammer-like standards very much in place however this is not always the norm.

The success of Harry Potter may partly be to do with a desire to replicate what education was still like up until the mid 1960s.

Clearly because, fortunately, the human being is a varied and diverse species, in which not everybody shares the same likes and dislikes. I don't know what you buy, but there will certainly be those who would refer to that as crap as well.

If you hadn't worked that out for yourself a long time ago I'm afraid there's not much hope in you ever becoming a useful member of a complete multi-dimensional society. Either that or you just enjoy gratuitous condescension.

Either way, I can't help but feel that your question displays a certain level of ignorance and arrogance.

Yes, I fully agree with you.
On the other hand, those books are not written badly, the recipee (magics and co) is not a bad one, etc. so the question is: why do young (*) people ONLY read that kind of stories ? I have nothing against it, but then they would read other books as well ?

(*) I have seen a lot od adults, in the London underground, read harry potter books as well as youngsters.

And the critics of Gone with the Wind, Treasure Island, ANY of Charles Dickens or Mark Twain, and so on and so on...said the same thing. An author doesn't write for everybody. They have a story to tell and hope SOME people enjoy it.

Obviously it's not crap, otherwise it wouldn't be as popular as it is. If it was crap no one would of bought the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th and 7th book would they? Just because you may not like it doesn't mean that it's not good.
I Have read lots of books, different genres, classic, horror, fantasy, crime and still love the Harry Potter series.
