Sadly, the speed of the processor isn't really dependent of Mhz or Ghz anymore.
For example, the fastest Pentium4's run on a 3.6Ghz (3600Mhz roughly.) however, although the Core2Duo's run slower (1.8Ghz to 2.8Ghz) can be as much as four times as faster compared to a Pentium 4 because the Core2Duo's are more efficient and runs cooler, not to mention those are dual or quad core processors which can be 50 to 100% faster compared to similar but single core processors.

Previous technology Pentiums (Prescott/Presler) went up to 3.73Ghz. BUT they were HOT and only good as spaceheaters. AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ runs at 3.2Ghz. New Core2 Duo runs up to 3.0Ghz but does more instructions per clock cycle. My idol lets his C2Duo rock n roll to this level:

You can get quad core processors which go up 3.0GHz. Thats a combined speed of 12GHz. On most servers you can now get dual quad core.
