The best one was the 1989 "World Series" Bay Area earthquake. A 7.1 on the Richter scale (that's strong).
In San Jose we were isolated from the world. All the electricity and phones were out, there was no TV, and the radio stations' antennas had collapsed. Besides that, the freeways that could take us out had all buckled and were impassible, we heard from people that had made it by them.
There was nothing to do, so I got a basketball and went up to the schoolyard to shoot some hoops until something changed. I wasn't the only one who had that idea - the schoolyard started to fill up with players and we had a few good pick-up games while people filtered in with rumors about the quake.
The aftershocks were the worst part. Most of us didn't get much sleep for the next two weeks - the aftershocks kept happening and waking us up. After a while everyone was war-weary and tired of it all. Of course, things got back to normal in time. But the basketball games became a neighborhood tradition. I played six times a week for the next year.

Nah, only tremors. And that was when I was in grade 3.
In 1954 we had a 5.5 that did a bit of damage and apparently we get at least 1 a year but only small.
I don't know how people can live on west coast of USA when it's only a matter time before they have another major quake.

I'm lucky to be here today to retell this story
