I suggest 'love' because we only sacrifice ourselves for others if we love them. Although military conscription is an exception to this rule.
Actually, it is more likely that 'improvement is the mother of invention'; most inventions strictly were not necessities; they solved annoying problems. Eg the vacuum cleaner.
