So, your question is about which frame of mind should one be in before one speaks, writes or interacts with another being? Well since the proverb stresses great joy or great anger, then I would suggest an emotion that can't be expressed with "great" in front of it.
In the midst of great sadness/ sorrow/ happiness/ humour/ childishness/ churlishnous, civility, kindness etc.
