Light is a frequency modulation, just like sound, although sound moves so much slower. Simply by blocking light you can make your surroundings dark but it doesn't mean it goes away, it is simply deflected at and around the obstacle and carries on travelling at 186,000 miles per second/300,000 kilometers per second.
