Ahh.. trying to figure out that homework.
You need to get a common denominator. In this case we'll use (4*5) to get 20, but if your denominators were say 3 and 6, you could use 6.

1/4 + 3/5 =
5/20 + 12/20

See how I changed the numerator, 4*5=20 so 1*5 and 5*4=20 so 3*4. When multiplying (or dividing) part of the fraction, you must do the same thing to the other part.
Now that you have a common denominator, you can add the numerator.

5/20 + 12/20 = 17/20

This cannot be reduced any further, so you're done.

LCM of the denominators = 4 * 5 = 20

So 20 is the final denominator.

Multiply the each term by 20 to get the numerator, i.e.

20 * 1/4 + 20 * 3/5

= 5 + 4*3

= 5 + 12

= 17

Therefore, the fraction is 17/20

Hence, 1/4 + 3/5 = 17/20

1/4 +3/5

you find the L.C.M of 4 and 5 which is 20, then yoy divide 20 by 4, get 5 and add 1 giving 6 PLUS 20 divide by 5 giving 4 and add 3 giving 7. so its 6+7=13/20. remember to give the answer in fraction form

the ans is 13/20

Multiply the denominators: 4*5=20
Divide 20 by 4 to get 5
Multiply 1 by 5
So the first fraction becomes: 5/20

Now divide 20 by 5 to get 4
Multiply 3 by 4
So the second fraction becomes 12/20

Now add 5/20 and 12/20 is 17/20

The answer as a fraction is 17/20

As a decimal it is 0.85
