(1 / 4) x + 3 = 15
(1 / 4) x = 12
x = 48

1 + 3 = 15.4x

Subtract 3 from both sides, and then multiply both sides by 4, and you see that x=48. An equation means both sides are equal, so if you do the same operation on both sides, it will still remain equal. Useful, no?
