Okay, I had a debate with someone about this recently.

The other party said you put the flatware in with handles DOWN, so that the face of the spoons, forks, and knives are exposed and get cleaner.

I say that when you put the flatware in the dishwasher, you put it in with handles UP! The flatware is meant to be grabbed by its handles, and besides you can stab yourself with a fork or knife if you have the tynes and blades facing up! The flatware gets just as clean with the blades, tynes, and bowls of the spoons down!

So, how do YOU put your flatware in the dishwasher: handles UP, or handles DOWN?

It also occurs to me that if you put the forks and spoons with the face up, you would have to touch the face when they are clean, and that is not sanitary. Another point in my argument!

First off, you should always consider safety. I work in a kitchen, and I'm taught NOT to leave knives in the sink, cause people would cut themselves, and not to load the dishes with Knives facing up. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter. Dishwashers have water flowing everywhere, so it's gonna get clean whether you put it up or down. I just put knives with the handles up, so people don't cut themselves.

The only problem is if you stick the knives in blade down they will often slide down through the grate to the bottom of the washer, if the handle is slim enough. Other problems could occur if you do allow the blade down. Ppl I think are worried the knives are going to come flying out the dishwasher while it's running and slice somebody's face off but in reality that is really probably not going to happen any more than would somebody stab themselve with the knife while taking it out the washer b/c they were being rtd.... = ]

Sharp knive blades down, then mix all other flatware so that some is up and some is down! This is how my dishwasher manual told me to do this. Also, not too long ago, a newspaper article described how a young granddaughter was killed accidently by running through the kitchen, tripped and fell on top of some sharp knives sticking up that had been placed with the sharp blades up, in the dishwasher rack, while the grandmother was loading it. This is a true story!

I have always loaded my dishwasher with the handles up for safety and because the eating end is heavier and will not be forced out of the utility basket...
I always put the heavier end in the basket...
That generally means the handles are up...
Also it is good to put plastic cookware on the top shelf so it wont burn or warp in the drying cycle...
