I can't say for sure. I've supported soccer since 1971 (Philadelphia Atoms) and am currently involved with an organization trying to convince MLS to grant an expansion franchise here. I think the challenge is the oversaturated American sports market. While it may not reach the status that it enjoys around the world, I think it can be successful here.
I don't appreciate the aspersions submitted by those who think our society doesn't understand or appreciate soccer or the fact that that is why it isn't popular here. I was vacationing at the shore this summer and there was a soccer tournament for kids that attracted 9,000 players.

Yes. In addition to the MLS getting more attention, interest in the sport of soccer is at its highest level ever in the United States, with more than 19 million children, ages five to 19, participating regularly. Notably, more children are participating in organized soccer than peewee football, youth basketball or Little League baseball.
It might take some time, but we're on the right path.

Are you kidding? I think it will. I love soccer.. I miss playing it though.. I use to play for 5 years and I use to want to to be on the US team.. Soccer is a huge sport where I live.. Its the number 1 sport played in Folsom, Ca. I even love watching it on TV and I was and still am excited that Italy won the world cup, cause well I'm 80% Italian. Its a huge sport and I think it will be.. We have a US team. The girls team is really good. and didn't David Beckham come to play on the team???? That's huge cause he is a great player. I hope it will catch on, cause there's no other sport I love more than soccer.. woohoo!!! Yay for soccer lovers..

initially, i'm american and that i like soccer too, i think of soccer is catching on slightly right here interior the states yet through fact the main commonplace activities for little ones a protracted time 5-12 is soccer yet regrettably those young ones are persuaded into different activities like soccer, basketball, ect. and that i'm chuffed the U. S. is making a run right here interior the worldwide cup yet I doubt we will win on saturday through fact Ghana has various velocity and knows a thank you to get the ball into the back of the internet and with the variations Bob Bradley made with our protection i do no longer think of we will postpone. I additionally think of US soccer will strengthen if we get our gamers in greater worldwide leagues like EPL, Serie A, German Bundesliga ect. quite of shitty MLS i think of we will have a greater useful hazard of going deep into the worldwide cup on a typical foundation.

I was anti-soccer for years, but now I love it.
I don't think I ever really disliked it.. it is just that Americans have so many other sport choices.. I never gave it a chance.
I hope it catches on... Soccer players are in excellent shape. Better for you than baseball or football!
but I don't think that the Beckham move will affect American opinion. Everyone I know is uninterested in him.

possibly. However, I don't think it will be during this generation if it does. Most likely, it will be 1 or 2 generations down the road before we see it catch on in this country if it ever does.
simply put though...I don't see it ever eclipsing baseball, basketball or football....because americans want sports that also make you think and strategize alot more than what Soccer does. That's why fantasy sports and sports cards have always been so popular.....it's a chance to enjoy something athletic and still geek out over it.

I think what it takes is for the US to do really well in several consecutive world cups and preferably winning one. That's still a few decades away, but as long as MLS survives, they may one day really have a good enough team to capture the imagination of all Americans.
Anyway, playing soccer has already caught on, esp. among kids. Now to get the kids who are playing to watch MLS soccer, and stay loyal to it as they get older... That's the biggest challenge for now.

Unfortunately no. Most U.S. kids in school don't want to run all that much. And if the kids are not interested, parent won't be. But there's hope in the women's soccer cause of the earlier successes by US women teams.

Probably not. The U.S. is too egocentric to adopt "foreign" sports and value international competition. Media support is not anywhere near what it is for the classic American sports (football, baseball, and basketball). Despite well-publicized signings of first class international stars (albeit when they are past their prime), the tacit undermining of the sport in the mass media cannot be overcome too easily.
