What would happen if I called my friend from Sudan an African American.
If you work with, in your class or know someone as a friend then how about their name.
If you need to search for someone because they are missing
or most wanted etc
then a colour description will be need white / black

African-American is a bit lame to me. Why arent there European-Americans? African-Africans?
Also Caucasian rubs me the wrong way too. If you use that word you might as well use ******* (as if that will happen) and Mongoloid.
Whats wrong with black, white, asian?

Well I personally would describe myself as 'Snickers' candy bar brown, but it's not listed as a choice on forms to identify my ethnicity. I prefer to be called 'black' American and not 'African-American' because I, nor my parents, or grandparents were born in Africa.

Most of us are human......but how do you get around it when you are describing someone. I'm rather tan, but I have never been offended when someone refers to me as white........but have you ever noticed people rarely say he was brown, they say he was Mexican or Spanish? Or they don't say she was light complected with almond shaped eyes, they say oriental. It is all just words and unless it is said in a hurtful manner why do people get bent out of shape about it?

Not all blacks come from Africa and not all Americans that come from Africa are black, so if you want to give a description of someone, I would say black. When a white person is described they don't say European American, they say caucasion which describes their color. So I guess it depends on what they're referencing.

I worked in Africa for a year and many there found it offensive that people called themselves 'african american' because they (to the minds of the people who are actually african as stamped in their passports) are NOT african. Being african is a lot more to do with your continent than your colour and africa contains people of many shades.

I think people need to quit being so damn sensitive. I don't get offended when people call me "white" instead of "German-American". People need to find better things to be angry about. There is PLENTY of anger-worthy things going on right now in the world. This is not one of them.
