According to what I know, Sonny was a true individual. Part of his story includes a period of time when he was very well respected and popular as a jazz musician. He intentionally left the limelight and did not play gigs at clubs. Instead, he would go to the very middle of the Williamsburg Bridge, and stand in the walkway and play his horn by himself. Eventually, he returned to the scene.
An unusual hair style, for a man such as Sonny, is just small beans.
