I don't know what they are called. I open my bonnet from in the car... lift it a little, and then a thin silver bar (hydraulic hinge?) comes out of another wider silver thin bar, and takes care of the rest... lifting up the bonnet with a space-age release of air or sound... then holds the bonnet up in position.

I've also got two which gently lift open the boot after you open it a fraction.

Question: I left my bonnet/hood open for a while whilst servicing the car... and I then noticed that hydraulic hingey thing put up a bit of resistance to closing... and it gave a reluctant sound..... prolly cause it had been raised for 5 hours.

Are you meant to use some sort of lubricant to keep those hinges in good shape?????????? Thanks.

These are generally called Gas Struts, and as the name implies pressure filled cylinders.Lubricating would be useless, with the exception of perhaps the swivel pins at top and bottom.

I hope it didn't have a manual release thing built in. On some cars, you need to move a bar out the way on the hood shock before closing it.

I have experienced the same thing you have. It's somewhat normal. The piston just gets stuck. I'm not to sure exactly why. Kinda like "why does the toast always land butter-side down?" deals.

I just keep them clean. Some oils can ruin the rubber seals. Avoid them.

Thank you for using both English and American

there called gas rods and you can squirt some WD-40 on the rods and work the bonnet up and down a few times and that should help them work a little easier, they are just another wear item that needs replaced every few years when they start acting up.

Lofty is correct - they are called gas struts. They are maintenance free but a swipe with oil on the shiny part or a squirt of WD-40 would help them stay in prime condition.

You could try lubricating them, maybe with some oil. They are called lift supports, and they do go bad sometimes so keep that in mind too. Although when they go bad they will not put up a fight, but rather they will not hold air like they do now.

No. Lube will mostly attract dust and grit which will wear out the seal faster. Just keep the shiny part shiny.
